Gather on Maui Wedding Guide: A Photographer's Perspective on One of Maui's Most Versatile Wedding Venues
After photographing multiple weddings at Gather on Maui over the years, I've come to appreciate something that couples often don't realize when they're first venue shopping: convenience matters.
Beautiful views matter too, of course. So does great food, a stunning ceremony location, and a sunset that leaves your guests speechless. But when your ceremony, portraits, cocktail hour, and reception can all flow naturally without moving guests across the island, it creates a completely different wedding-day experience.
Located in Wailea on Maui's sunny south shore, Gather on Maui is one of the most versatile wedding venues on the island. Whether you're planning an intimate wedding with your closest family and friends or a larger destination wedding celebration, the venue offers multiple ceremony locations, reception options, and some truly beautiful opportunities for photography throughout the day.
As a Maui wedding photographer who photographs weddings on both digital and medium-format film, Gather remains one of my favorite venues to work at—not only because of the scenery, but because of how effortlessly a wedding day can unfold here.
How Much Does a Wedding at Gather on Maui Cost ?
Wedding pricing at Gather on Maui varies quite a bit depending on the ceremony and reception spaces you choose, your guest count, and whether you’re planning an intimate ceremony or a larger wedding and reception.
For 2026, Gather offers options ranging from smaller event spaces to full restaurant and venue buyouts, while the Molokini Lookout is available for larger-scale celebrations - I personally also love it for intimate weddings.
The Wedding Knoll begins at $1,250 while the Molokini Lookout begins at $3,000 for celebrations of up to 80 guests. Both ceremony locations offer discounted site fees when hosting your reception at Gather. Reception spaces vary depending on guest count, with additional site fees and food and beverage minimums. Why Couples Love Gather on Maui
One of the biggest advantages of Gather on Maui is flexibility.
Many Maui wedding venues excel at one specific type of celebration. Gather, however, works beautifully for intimate weddings, destination weddings, and larger guest counts alike.

Gather on Maui Ceremony Locations: Wedding Knoll vs. Molokini Lookout The Wedding Knoll
One of my favorite things about Gather on Maui is that couples aren’t limited to one ceremony setup. The Wedding Knoll and Molokini Lookout both have ocean views, but they photograph and feel noticeably different. The Wedding Knoll gives you more of that open, elevated Maui landscape, while Molokini Lookout feels a little more tucked into the property. Having photographed weddings at Gather, I think the ceremony location is worth choosing based not only on guest count and setup, but also on the overall look you want in your photographs.
The Wedding Knoll is one of Gather on Maui's most popular ceremony locations, and for good reason.
Perched above the coastline, it offers sweeping ocean views and creates an incredible backdrop for exchanging vows. The elevated location allows guests to enjoy the scenery while still feeling connected to the ceremony itself.
As a photographer, I particularly love this location during the later afternoon and evening hours. The light becomes softer, the colors begin to warm, and couples can move directly into portraits following the ceremony without losing momentum in their timeline.

Molokini Lookout Gather Maui
For couples wanting a slightly different perspective, Molokini Lookout offers another beautiful ceremony option.
With views stretching toward Molokini Crater and the South Maui coastline, the setting feels both expansive and intimate at the same time.
I've photographed a wedding here and loved how naturally Maui becomes part of the story. Rather than competing with the couple, the scenery enhances the experience and provides a sense of place that feels uniquely Hawaiian.
If you're dreaming of ocean views without needing to host your ceremony directly on the sand, Molokini Lookout is a wonderful option to consider.
Reception Options at Gather on Maui
One of the reasons I frequently recommend Gather on Maui to couples is because of how seamlessly the venue transitions from ceremony to reception.
The venue offers multiple reception possibilities, including dining within the restaurant space as well as celebrations on the lawn area below.
This flexibility allows couples to create an experience that feels personal while keeping everything conveniently located in one place.
From a photography standpoint, this is incredibly valuable.
Instead of spending valuable wedding-day time transporting guests or moving between locations, couples are able to focus on celebrating with the people they traveled all the way to Maui to be with.
If I Were Planning Photography for a Gather on Maui Wedding
Build the timeline around the light.
Gather is beautiful throughout the afternoon, but the property changes as the sun gets lower. You don’t necessarily want to burn the best portrait light doing something that could have happened earlier. I personally prefer to capture my couple’s solo portraits prior to the wedding ceremony taking place. This way once the ceremony concludes we can focus strictly on the shot list for wedding party photos and family photos before capturing intimate couple portraits in the more golden early evening light.
Decide ahead of time whether you want beach portraits.
Couples have Palauea and Poʻolenalena nearby, but leaving the venue does eat into photography time. Sometimes staying at Gather makes more sense depending if you want to prioritize spending more time at the cocktail hour with your loved ones or if it’s important to have the beach included in your gallery. When it comes to beach portraits it typically is only for couple intimate portraits - This way we can take 15 to 20 minutes where surprisingly the timeframe does not feel too rushed but we do not have to cram in the shot list photos down on the beach. I always recommend accounting for the few extra minutes it takes to leave the property, park, and get back to Gather when we’re building this into the timeline. A quick zip down to the ocean and then back to the party !
Don’t underestimate the property itself.
As much as I do love beach photos know you don’t need to leave Gather to create variety. Between the ocean views, greenery, architecture and surrounding landscape, there are plenty of different looks we can create without ever leaving the property. The Wailea Gold Course in particular offers some breathtaking views as the light gets lower and staying on the property gives us more flexibility to follow the best light without taking you away from your guests for too long.
You do not need to get ready on property.
Gather does have locker rooms available for weddings as a getting ready space if desired. However, from a photographer perspective if you are wanting getting ready coverage I do not recommend getting ready on site. It is convenient but lighting for photography is not ideal in the locker rooms - There are many options for hotels or Airbnb properties nearby in Kihei or Wailea area that work perfectly for getting ready at and then are a short drive away from the venue.
Film Photography at Gather on Maui
Gather on Maui is one of my favorite venues to photograph on medium-format film.
The soft evening light that settles over Wailea photographs beautifully on film, especially during sunset portraits on the golf course and throughout the venue grounds.
Many of my couples choose hybrid wedding coverage, blending both digital and film photography throughout the day. Film has a timeless quality that pairs especially well with Gather's natural color palette—the warm greens of the golf course, the golden evening light, and the blues of the Pacific Ocean all translate beautifully on film.
For couples who are drawn to imagery that feels romantic, nostalgic, and enduring, Gather on Maui provides an incredible setting for both film and digital photography.
One of the things I especially love about photographing Gather on film is the variety the venue itself provides. Earlier in the day, the brighter greens and tropical landscape give film a completely different feel than the softer tones we get as the sun begins to drop. By golden hour, the golf course and ocean views take on a warmth that works beautifully with the softer, nostalgic quality of medium-format film, And for couples who choose to incorporate nearby beach portraits into their timeline, the sand, ocean , and open shoreline add another stunning layer into a film gallery.
Portrait Locations at Gather on Maui
One of the things I appreciate most about photographing weddings here is the variety of portrait opportunities available.
Couples can remain on-site and utilize:
The golf course grounds
Ocean-view pathways
Landscaped areas throughout the venue
Sunset overlooks
The property provides enough variety that many couples never need to leave.
However, for those wanting additional portrait locations, Gather's Wailea location makes it easy to incorporate nearby beaches as well.
Palauea Beach (White Rock Beach)
Located just minutes from Gather, Palauea Beach is one of my favorite portrait locations in South Maui.
The beach offers beautiful sand, incredible water color, and a quieter atmosphere than some of Maui's busier beaches.
It's especially lovely during sunset and works beautifully for couples wanting a few portraits that feel distinctly beach-focused.
Po'olenalena Beach
Another favorite nearby option is Po'olenalena Beach.
The combination of sand, lava rock formations, and open shoreline creates a timeless Maui backdrop while remaining conveniently close to the venue.
Many couples choose to step away for a brief portrait session before returning to their reception, allowing them to experience a little bit of Maui's coastline without disrupting the flow of the day.
Should You Leave Gather for Beach Wedding Photos?
Not every Gather wedding needs a separate beach stop. If photography time is limited, I usually prefer taking advantage of the variety already on the property rather than losing part of the timeline driving somewhere else. For couples who really want that classic Maui beach look, however, both Palauea and Poʻolenalena are close enough that we can incorporate the beach intentionally into the photography timeline.
With being a wedding located here in beautiful Hawaii I think it’s so special to be able to include tropical scenery with our greenery and the ocean into wedding galleries. To me I believe it is absolutely worth it to take advantage of the opportunity to capture photos down on one of the Wailea beaches during your wedding day at Gather.

What I’d Want My Couples to Know About Getting Married at Gather
Do we need to leave Gather for portraits?
No—and sometimes I specifically recommend that we don’t. Especially if you are thinking of being married up at the Molokini Lookout you have a 360 view of the South Side of Maui where I recommend to stay in the area for portraits.
Which ceremony location photographs best?
Both work beautifully, but they’re visually different. If it’s important to you to have greenery around then choose the Wedding Knoll. If you value having an open view 100% go with the Molokini Lookout as your ceremony choice.
Where should we get ready?
If you do not plan to have getting ready coverage as apart of your photography experience then getting ready on site would be the most convenient. However, if you do plan to have getting ready as apart of your day I recommend to get ready at a nearby hotel or Airbnb in the Kihei or Wailea are - this way your commute to the venue is short. A few favorite locations to get ready at would be Hotel Wailea, Fairmont Kea Lani, Four Seasons, The Andaz. Many of my clients have found some fantastic rental properties next to Wailea hotels that work wonderfully for their entire wedding party and family members to get ready at. I’m always happy to help with further recommendations if desired.
How much photography time would I recommend for a Gather wedding?
Elopements ( guest count below 10 ) : 2- 2.5 hours of coverage is the sweet spot if you would like just ceremony coverage, a few family photos, and intimate portraits. 5 hours if would like getting ready included and some reception coverage.
Full Weddings : 5 - 8 hours. This depends largely on if you are wanting getting ready photos and how much of your reception you would photographed. If you would like your entire day photographed an 8 hour timeline is what would work best.
